Is Recruiting in MLM Difficult?

“Am I required to know and recruit many people in an MLM program to be successful?” is a commonly asked question.

A answer from a number of upline sponsors commonly is something similar to the following…

“No, you can become very successful in MLM by Recruiting just one person every month or two and build up a greatgreat residual income.

These people don’t have to be people you already know. Think about how many people you interact with everyday in your normal day to day activities!

They tell you to sit down with pen and paper and make a list of everyone you know, have known, attended school with, done business with, worked with, go to church with, etc. and they explain that you will be astounded by %how many% people you come up with.

Surely not all these people will join your MLM business, however, you can still be very successful if only one in a hundred elects to join. Statistics show that if one out of every hundred people you contact about joining your business, does so, it will be sufficient to make your car payment, another one will make your house payment, and one more will retire you!

That’s really not so bad. Three out of every one hundred is achievable, but you have to make the contacts. As the saying goes, “the more you tell, the more you sell.” Also, all the people on your contact list know other people and although they may not be interested themselves, they may refer your to other people who will be interested.

Have you ever been turned down 97 times? That is a lot of rejection. And initially these rejections come from people you know, so the rejection is even more difficult. Most people will not last that long.

How many people do you know who can go out and face 100 people they know and get turned down by 97 of them and just continue to keep plugging along trying to recruit or sell products to an or hostile market?

If you are fortunate enough to recruit someone who is already a successful network marketer with necessary skills, who brings along his established downline with him and becomes a “heavy hitter” in your company, then technically the answer given above can be correct. If your company’s compensation plan is supportive, then that single recruit may be able to carry you along.

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to sponsor a “heavy hitter” who can rapidly go out and develop a large downline beneith you if you are only recruiting “one person every month or two.”

So what are your alternatives if you can’t land a “heavy hitter” early in you MLM sponsoring efforts and you do not enjoy the thought of being rejected by 97 out of every one hundred people you contact?

Instead of chasing after all your friends and family members and rapidly becoming a member of the NFL (No Friends Left) club, or bugging everyone within 30 feet of you as advocated by some sponsors, you need to narrow down your target market. Everyone is not your target market. Your target market is made up of people who are already seeking to start a home business, to earn extra money on a part-time basis, are looking for a MLM business to join or are already a member of some other MLM business. You can even further narrow down your niche to only the latter group if you desire. Then get them to come to you and get them to join your company by employing a soft sell technique instead of the hard sell methods pushed by many MLM sponsors.

“And just how am I supposed to do that?”, you might ask.

Well first you need to get their attention and interest by offering them something such as a free report or preferably a funded proposal that is relevant to your market and getting them on your mailing or contact list. Then, once they are on your list, you develop a relationship with them by providing them frequent free useful information relative to your product, company, the MLM industry, salesmanship, or marketing, etc. In their eyes you will quickly become an authority figure.

If you have targeted the correct market, you will soon have prospects calling you and asking you what you do and how they can enroll in your team.

Why are people in my MLM downline concerned that I am living out of my car?

I have an MLM that I’m working on building. It is a great low risk opportunity (low cost plus a money back guarantee) with a product that actually doesn’t require extra science or convincing (it’s not potions, pills, etc…rather, it’s best selling books).
However, the main hurdle I have is finding people who are open to the concept of MLM in general rather than the specific company I’m with. I find that either people are totally NOT interested in MLM or if they are interested, they’re already in their own and not interested in joining mine (which is understandable…because I’m not looking to switch to theirs either).

So my question is how and where people find GOOD prospects that are actually ready to sign up for a new MLM (I’ve seen ‘networking’ sites that help you build networks of like minded folks, but it’s the same problem, we’re all their to tout our own company…not to join someone else’s…and the websites themselves are often selling their own separate agenda).
Thoughts?

Do you believe if you get hung up on the numbers in MLM you are doomed to fail?

Mexico4me, i think you need learn what leverage actually is rather than just accepting a term from your MLM buddies.

In your silly example you merely transfered the hours worked to your downline without changing the total hours worked. Suddenly we are to believe that you are still making the same amount of money working no hours yet your downline makes money as well? So because you merely spread the hours worked out among more people the company is paying out more money? Right. Do the math.

This is my EXACT point. MLM is set up with the mentality that its better to make money by recruiting people than it is to work hard.

You are delusional if you suggest that is about sales first. You have said in prior answers that no one sells enough personal volume to make a living without a downline and that is precisely why MLM is flawed. Its about making money recruiting (a pyramid) not about sales. The fact that some product is sold doesn’t negate that fact.
Sunny, saying MLM is part franchising is merely MLM tag lines, aka propaganda to justify to the naive.

Think about what you are suggesting. Most people are not sales driven, yet you are telling them its the same as a franchise.

Can you actually imagine a franchise operation that didn’t first sell product? Gee, your new franchise is not moving any product, here is the answer, just open up more franchises! Brilliant.

Only in MLM are foolish principals like this accepted as intelligent.
